What this guide helps you decide
Measure wall width, floor depth, door swing and the locations of the drain, supply valves and outlets. Open every nearby door and drawer to check interference.
Start with the existing conditions
Decide what must be stored: hair tools, medications, cleaning products and towels require different drawer depths and safe outlet planning. A beautiful vanity with an unusable top drawer may be the wrong fit.
Plan materials, layout and access
Check whether the sink location and drain leave room for drawer boxes. Plan lighting, mirror height and countertop overhang before finalizing the cabinetry.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Ask for a dimensioned layout showing the plumbing bay and all drawer clearances. Verify shutoff access remains practical after installation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Shopping from overall width alone
- Blocking shutoff valves behind drawers
- Forgetting the bathroom door's swing
Tony’s Pro Tip
Put painter's tape on the floor to outline the proposed vanity, then open the bathroom door and stand at the sink.
Should you DIY or hire help?
Hire help if the vanity relocation needs new drains, supply lines, outlet relocation or repairs to a wet wall or floor.
