Built a custom front-entry awning and integrated the new structure into the existing roofline, adding structural posts, a finished fascia and a wood ceiling/soffit that makes the new entry cover look intentional with the home.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted a substantial covered entry over the existing double front doors that looked like it belonged with the house rather than something simply attached afterward.
Problems we encountered
The biggest challenge was tying a completely new structure into the existing roofline while keeping the proportions right around the doors, exterior lights, stairs and surrounding siding. The connection also had to shed water correctly where the new awning met the house.
How we overcame those problems
We laid out the new roof structure around the existing entry, framed and supported the projection, and carefully integrated the upper portion into the existing roof and fascia. The progression photos show the project from structural framing through the finished wood ceiling and fascia work.
The solution we came up with
We built a custom projecting awning with structural side posts, a wide finished fascia and a wood soffit/ceiling underneath. Rather than treating it as a stand-alone canopy, we tied the new awning into the home's existing roof system so the finished structure reads as part of the architecture.
What we learned
Small exterior additions can make a major visual difference, but the details where new construction meets the existing house determine whether the result looks original or added on. Roof integration, proportion and finish work matter as much as the framing itself.
Outdoor Living
Custom RV Outdoor Living Deck
Waterfront RV site
Built a raised, multi-level outdoor living deck beside an RV, finished with composite decking, stairs, a landing and black metal railings so the homeowner could step directly from the RV into a usable outdoor living space.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner had a dedicated place to park the RV beside the water but no comfortable outdoor living area around it. They wanted a deck that would function as an extension of the RV instead of stepping directly onto the ground.
Problems we encountered
The RV sat on an existing concrete pad, the surrounding grade dropped away, the deck had to align with the RV entry, and the structure had to fit around the existing landscape and retaining-wall conditions. The elevation also meant stairs and guardrails needed to be planned from the beginning.
How we overcame those problems
We laid out the deck around the RV rather than treating it like a standard rectangular platform. Posts, beams and joists were built around the existing concrete pad, and a lower landing was incorporated so the stair transition worked naturally with the grade.
The solution we came up with
We built a raised, multi-level deck and finished the deck and stair surfaces with composite decking for a clean, lower-maintenance finish. A black metal railing system around the deck, landing and stairs completed the outdoor living space while keeping the waterfront view open.
What we learned
Building around an RV means planning for more than the property. Door location, RV clearance, leveling jacks, slide-outs, access points and possible future movement all need to be considered before framing begins.
Resurfaced a large covered patio ceiling with finished wood planking and upgraded the space with new recessed lighting, ceiling fans, electric space heaters, wiring and breakers.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted to completely upgrade a large covered patio that had an aging, dated ceiling. They wanted the space to feel more finished while improving lighting, air circulation and year-round comfort.
Problems we encountered
The existing ceiling had deteriorated seams and an unfinished appearance. Because the homeowner also wanted recessed lighting, ceiling fans and electric space heaters, the electrical system had to be planned around new loads, fixture locations and the layout of the finished ceiling.
How we overcame those problems
We coordinated the finish carpentry and electrical layout before closing the ceiling. The wood planking was installed around the brick columns, walls and fixture locations, while new wiring was routed for the lighting, fans and heaters. New circuits and breakers were installed for the added equipment.
The solution we came up with
The patio received a new wood-plank ceiling, recessed lighting, ceiling fans, electric space heaters, new wiring and new breakers. The result is a much more finished outdoor room that can be used comfortably through more of the year.
What we learned
Projects like this work best when finish carpentry and electrical planning are designed together from the beginning. Fixture locations, electrical loads, wiring routes and ceiling layout all affect one another.

Custom Home Office Transformation & Built-In Lighting
Residential home office
Transformed a dark traditional office with new paneling, custom shelving with accent lighting, metal French doors, recessed lighting, a ceiling fan and concealed wiring routed behind the walls and through the attic.

What the homeowner wanted
The original office had extensive dark wood paneling that made the room feel heavy and dated. The homeowner wanted to keep the upscale character while making the office brighter, cleaner and more contemporary.
Problems we encountered
This was more than a cosmetic repaint. The room had existing wall treatments, built-ins, electrical locations and a high finished ceiling. The new shelving required integrated accent lighting, while the new recessed lights, ceiling fan and metal French doors all had to work with the redesigned room.
How we overcame those problems
We replaced the old dark wall treatment with a new paneling design and reworked the feature wall around the office cabinetry. Wiring was routed behind the walls and through the attic so the shelf lighting and new electrical features could be integrated without exposed cords or surface conduit.
The solution we came up with
The finished office combines new paneling, custom built-in shelving, individual shelf accent lighting, recessed lights, a ceiling fan, metal French doors and concealed electrical wiring. The room kept its architectural presence but gained a much brighter and more modern character.
What we learned
A dramatic room transformation does not always require changing the basic layout. Coordinating the carpentry and electrical work before the finished surfaces go back on is what makes built-in lighting look truly built in.

Optical Illusion Tile Accent Wall & TV Installation
Covered patio
Turned a plain covered-patio wall into a dramatic entertainment feature with high-contrast optical illusion tile and a wall-mounted television.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted to turn a plain covered-patio wall into a dramatic focal point and create a dedicated outdoor TV wall.
Problems we encountered
The tile pattern is highly geometric, so alignment mattered throughout the entire wall. Any drift in the layout would be obvious because the pattern depends on the lines meeting cleanly across multiple tiles. TV placement also had to coordinate with the finished tile surface and electrical locations.
How we overcame those problems
We established the tile layout before installation and kept reference lines consistent across the wall. Cuts around the window, outlets, edges and television area were planned so the geometric pattern stayed intentional rather than looking interrupted.
The solution we came up with
We covered the patio wall with bold black-and-white optical illusion tile and then mounted the television within the completed feature wall, creating a custom outdoor entertainment focal point.
What we learned
Highly patterned tile is much less forgiving than ordinary field tile. Layout, reference lines, consistent spacing and planned cuts make the difference between a pattern that reads cleanly and one that visibly drifts.
Installed and grouted a full-height white tile wall, added wood floating shelves and installed a new black vent hood to create a brighter, more custom cooktop wall.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted to give the kitchen wall a cleaner, more finished look and create a more intentional focal point around the cooktop area.
Problems we encountered
The large continuous wall had multiple outlets, switches, wiring locations and the vent penetration breaking up the tile field. The floating shelves also had to be laid out so they stayed level and balanced around the new hood.
How we overcame those problems
We laid out the tile across the full wall, made the required cuts around electrical boxes and the vent opening, and grouted the installation. The shelf locations were then coordinated around the cooktop and hood so the finished wall remained balanced.
The solution we came up with
A full-height white tile wall now anchors the kitchen, with multiple wood floating shelves and a new black vent hood centered over the cooktop. The result is brighter, cleaner and more architectural than the original wall.
What we learned
On a large tile wall, the quality of the finished project shows most around penetrations and transitions. Clean cuts around outlets, venting, shelves and corners make the installation look planned rather than simply tiled.

Custom Board-and-Batten Nursery Accent Wall
Baby's nursery
Built a custom half-height board-and-batten feature wall for a baby's nursery, carefully laying out the battens around existing outlets and finishing the lower wall in crisp white with a soft contrasting color above.

The homeowner wanted to give the baby's nursery more character and create a custom feature wall that felt soft, clean and intentional without overwhelming the room.
Problems we encountered
The wall included existing electrical outlets, so the board-and-batten layout had to work around them while keeping the spacing visually balanced. The proportions also had to fit the wall height so the finished design looked architectural.
How we overcame those problems
We laid out the horizontal and vertical trim pieces across the full wall before installation, adjusted the spacing around the outlets and kept the vertical battens consistent from side to side. The trim and lower wall were then caulked, prepped and painted.
The solution we came up with
We created a custom half-height board-and-batten wall with a full-width top rail, evenly spaced battens, a finished lower trim detail, clean outlet integration and a crisp white finish beneath the nursery's soft upper-wall color.
What we learned
Board-and-batten looks simple, but the quality comes down to layout and proportion. Balancing panel widths and planning around outlets before cutting material makes the finished wall look designed with the room.

Custom Fabricated Steel Stair & Landing Railing

Fabricated and installed a modern steel railing system that follows the staircase and upper landing, with square posts, horizontal rails, field-fitted stair angles and a separate wall-mounted handrail.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted a clean, modern railing system that matched the contemporary interior and gave the staircase a much more custom architectural look.
Problems we encountered
The railing had to follow the exact pitch of the staircase, transition cleanly into the upper landing, and fit the existing walls and floors. Every post, horizontal rail, angle and connection had to match the actual staircase.
How we overcame those problems
We measured the stair run and landing, fabricated the steel components to fit, and assembled the railing in place so the lines stayed straight and the transitions remained consistent. The horizontal members were kept evenly spaced while following the stair angle and tying into the landing.
The solution we came up with
The finished system uses square steel posts, multiple horizontal steel rails, custom stair-angle fabrication, a matching upper-landing guard and a separate wall-mounted handrail on the opposite side of the stairs.
What we learned
Custom railing work is all about precision. Small errors in angle or spacing become very noticeable across a long stair run, so careful field measurement and fit-up are essential.
Routed new concealed wiring through an opened patio ceiling for switched receptacles and lighting, coordinating electrical box locations with the framing and future finished ceiling.

The homeowner wanted the covered patio to have convenient, properly located power for lighting and switched receptacles so the space could function more like an outdoor living area.
Problems we encountered
The existing patio construction limited where wiring could be concealed. The electrical routes had to work through the roof and ceiling framing while coordinating box locations with beams, siding, brick and the future finished ceiling.
How we overcame those problems
With the ceiling opened up, we planned the wiring routes before the finish went back in. New cable was routed through the framing and device and junction boxes were positioned where the lighting and switched receptacles needed to land.
The solution we came up with
The patio received concealed electrical rough-in for switched receptacles and lighting, with new wiring and boxes positioned around the framing so the finished ceiling could later cover the electrical routes cleanly.
What we learned
Outdoor electrical upgrades integrate much more cleanly when the wiring is planned before the ceiling finish is installed. Coordinating framing, electrical routes and finish work up front avoids visible surface wiring later.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted a secure courtyard entrance that looked intentional with the home’s masonry and modern architectural lines—not an off-the-shelf gate added as an afterthought.
Problems we encountered
The finished opening had to work with existing masonry, which meant the gate needed to fit the real field conditions. Hinge placement, latch position, clearances and the visual reveal all had to be right for the gate to swing and close cleanly.
How we overcame those problems
We measured and fitted the opening in the field, fabricated the steel gate around those actual dimensions, then completed the welding, hinge setup, alignment and final adjustments on site.
The solution we came up with
A one-off steel courtyard gate that fits the opening, functions smoothly and complements the home instead of looking like a retrofit.
What we learned
Custom metalwork should be designed around the actual finished opening. Building in a little adjustability and doing the final fit in the field makes the difference between “close” and correct.

The goal was a dramatic open-riser staircase for a $1.5 million custom home—structural steel with wood treads, custom steel posts, cable infill and wood handrails.
Problems we encountered
Every part of the staircase affected the next part. Rise and run, individual tread supports, post locations, cable lines and the finished handrail all had to stay in alignment across a large architectural feature.
How we overcame those problems
We fabricated the structural steel and individual tread supports in sequence, repeatedly checked the geometry, and coordinated the steel, wood and cable components so the finished elements would meet cleanly.
The solution we came up with
A fully custom open-riser staircase that combines structural steel fabrication with warm wood details and a clean cable-railing system.
What we learned
On a staircase like this, small layout errors multiply. Tread thickness, post placement, railing height and handrail geometry have to be coordinated before fabrication—not figured out at the end.

A completely custom stainless-steel railing system for a tri-level condo. Posts and handrails were individually measured, fabricated and TIG welded, then fitted with stainless cable infill across multiple stair runs and landings.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted a clean stainless-steel and cable railing system for a tri-level condo in Rush Creek, with a refined modern look across several stair runs and landings.
Problems we encountered
Multiple levels and changing stair angles meant there was no “standard” post or handrail. Stainless also shows alignment and finish problems easily, and TIG welding must be controlled to limit heat distortion.
How we overcame those problems
Every post and handrail section was individually measured and fabricated. We TIG welded the stainless components, field-fitted the system across the different levels, then installed and tensioned the stainless cable infill.
The solution we came up with
A completely custom stainless railing system that follows the condo’s geometry from level to level while maintaining consistent lines and a high-end finish.
What we learned
With cable and stainless, precision starts with the posts. If the posts and handrails are right, the cable lines look effortless; if they are not, every cable makes the error more visible.
Bathrooms
Bathtub-to-Walk-In Shower Conversion
Residential remodel
Removed the existing bathtub and converted the footprint into a custom tiled walk-in shower with tiled floor and walls, recessed niche and a frameless glass enclosure.

Problems we encountered
A tub footprint was being asked to function as a shower. That brings drainage, floor slope, waterproofing, wall preparation, tile layout and final glass dimensions together in one relatively tight space.
How we overcame those problems
We planned the shower from the substrate outward—preparing the walls and floor, coordinating waterproofing and drainage, laying out the niche and tile, and allowing the finished tile work to establish the final dimensions for the glass.
The solution we came up with
A custom tiled walk-in shower that makes better use of the original tub area and finishes with a clean frameless enclosure.
What we learned
The tile is the part everyone sees, but the long-term success of a shower is determined by what is underneath it. Waterproofing, slope and layout have to be solved before the first finish tile goes on.
Kitchens
Kitchen Appliance & Cabinet Modification
Residential remodel
Modified an older kitchen to remove the cooktop and install a freestanding range, replaced the vent hood with an over-the-range microwave, and converted the old wall oven/microwave cabinet into useful shelving while preserving the existing cabinetry.

The homeowner wanted to update the kitchen without replacing all of the cabinetry: remove the cooktop, add a freestanding range, replace the hood with an over-the-range microwave and turn the old wall-oven cabinet into useful shelving.

The existing cabinets and appliance openings were built around a completely different layout. New appliances had to fit while preserving as much of the original cabinetry and finish as possible.
How we overcame those problems
We measured the new appliances, modified only the cabinet areas that needed to change, adapted the old oven/microwave cabinet into shelving and coordinated the new range and microwave locations with the surrounding kitchen.
The solution we came up with
A targeted kitchen reconfiguration that modernized the appliance layout and added storage without the cost and disruption of replacing the entire kitchen.
What we learned
Good remodeling is often selective. Careful measurement and surgical cabinet modifications can solve a dated layout while preserving the parts of a kitchen that still work well.
Custom Builds
Custom Attached Outdoor Storage Shed
Residential exterior
Transformed an aging open storage area into a fully enclosed shed attached to the home, with custom doors, built-in shelving and a shingled roof integrated into the existing structure. Blue accent panels were selected by the homeowner.

The homeowner wanted an aging open storage area turned into secure, enclosed outdoor storage that felt like part of the house rather than a separate temporary shed.
Problems we encountered
The new enclosure had to tie into the existing home, protect the contents from weather, provide large practical access doors and still make use of the available footprint and existing storage features.
How we overcame those problems
We framed the enclosure around the existing conditions, built custom doors and shelving, added a shingled roof and carefully handled the transitions where the new structure meets the home. The blue accent panels were incorporated as the homeowner requested.
The solution we came up with
A fully enclosed attached storage shed with custom access, built-in storage and roof protection integrated into the existing exterior.
What we learned
When a new structure attaches to a house, the most important details are the transitions—roofing, drainage, flashing and fit. Those details matter more than simply making the walls look finished.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted a true floor-to-ceiling feature wall: a 19-foot stacked-stone fireplace with a linear electric fireplace, custom mantel, TV provisions and color-changing accent lighting.
Problems we encountered
The height made access and layout much more demanding. The fireplace, mantel, television location, electrical provisions, lighting and stone pattern all had to line up across a very tall surface before the finish work covered everything.
How we overcame those problems
We used high-access scaffolding, established the main centerlines and elevations first, coordinated the fireplace/TV/lighting provisions, and then built the stone installation upward in a controlled sequence.
The solution we came up with
A dramatic 19-foot architectural fireplace wall that combines stone, a linear fireplace, custom mantel, television integration and accent lighting into one finished feature.
What we learned
Tall feature walls punish late decisions. Electrical, lighting, TV height, mantel position and every penetration should be finalized before the finish material starts climbing the wall.

Installed a large wood-fired pizza oven in an existing outdoor kitchen and routed a stainless chimney system through the covered patio and roof, including ceiling penetration, roof flashing and weatherproofing.

The homeowner wanted a large wood-fired pizza oven added to an existing outdoor kitchen at Ridge Lakes and safely vented through the covered patio and roof.
Problems we encountered
The oven itself was only part of the job. The stainless chimney had to travel through the patio ceiling and roof while maintaining a practical route, clearances, support and a weather-tight roof penetration.
How we overcame those problems
We laid out the chimney path from the oven upward, coordinated the ceiling and roof penetrations, installed the stainless vent components and completed the roof flashing and weatherproofing around the new penetration.
The solution we came up with
A fully integrated wood-fired pizza oven with a dedicated stainless chimney system routed through the existing covered outdoor kitchen.
What we learned
Specialty outdoor appliances are often venting projects as much as appliance projects. The safest, cleanest result comes from planning the chimney route before cutting the first opening.

Hidden Room & Concealed Cabinet Entrance
Secret-room conversion
Reworked an existing built-in cabinet wall to create a concealed entrance into a hidden room. The cabinetry was reframed and modified so the doorway disappears into the finished wall, with full-size bunk beds inside the secret room.

Problems we encountered
A cabinet section had to function like a door without looking like one. The moving panel needed clearance, stable support and reliable hardware while the cabinet lines and gaps still had to read as normal built-ins.
How we overcame those problems
We reworked the cabinet wall and framing, designed the concealed opening around the required swing and clearances, aligned the finished cabinet faces and then built out the interior space for the full-size bunks.
The solution we came up with
A functional hidden-room entrance disguised as part of the built-in cabinet wall, leading to a finished bunk room behind it.
What we learned
Hidden doors are won or lost before trim goes on. Hardware, swing path, weight, clearances and reveal lines all need to be designed together so the finished door can disappear convincingly.

Installed approximately 350 linear feet of wrought-iron fencing around the property and pool area, including custom-fabricated gates, field welding, layout, post alignment and final gate adjustment.

Problems we encountered
On a fence this long, small layout errors can become large alignment problems. Grade changes, post spacing, straight sight lines and multiple gate openings all had to work together across the property.
How we overcame those problems
We established the layout and control points first, set and aligned the posts, completed field welding where required, fabricated the gates to the actual openings and performed final gate adjustment after the fence was in place.
The solution we came up with
A large-scale wrought-iron perimeter system with custom gates, consistent alignment and a finished appearance around the home and pool area.
What we learned
Long fence projects are layout projects first. Accurate control lines and gate planning at the beginning prevent hundreds of feet of small errors from accumulating by the end.

Problems we encountered
Cable railing makes alignment very visible. Post locations, stair geometry, landing transitions, cable spacing and tension all had to remain consistent while integrating the wood handrails.
How we overcame those problems
We laid out the posts carefully, established clean lines through the stair and landing, installed the cable runs in a controlled sequence and tensioned them systematically before completing the handrail details.
The solution we came up with
A ClearView cable-railing system that preserves the open character of the floating staircase while providing a finished guard and handrail system.
What we learned
Cable does not hide anything. Precise post placement is the foundation of the entire job; once the posts are right, the cable can reinforce the architecture instead of exposing inconsistencies.

Designed, fabricated and installed a custom horizontal steel railing system for a second-story covered balcony in Heath. The on-site build included structural posts, individually fitted horizontal members, welding, grinding and final alignment.

The homeowner wanted a modern horizontal steel railing for a second-story covered balcony in Heath—clean, simple lines with the strength and permanence of welded steel.
Problems we encountered
Long horizontal members make even small changes in level or spacing obvious. The railing also had to fit the actual balcony conditions, stay aligned during welding and finish cleanly after the field fabrication.
How we overcame those problems
We set the structural posts first, individually fitted the horizontal members, tack-welded and checked alignment repeatedly, then completed the welds, grinding and final adjustments in a controlled sequence.
The solution we came up with
A custom field-fabricated steel balcony railing with consistent horizontal lines, solid posts and a clean modern profile.
What we learned
Welding sequence matters on architectural steel. Tack, verify, weld and recheck—because heat can pull a long railing out of line faster than most people expect.

Problems we encountered
There was no stock structure to adapt. The mailbox opening, recessed address area, overall proportions and exterior substrate all had to be created from scratch and prepared correctly for the final stucco system.
How we overcame those problems
We framed and sheathed the structure, built the recessed address and mailbox openings into the layout, refined the proportions and completed the exterior foam preparation so the stucco finish could be applied cleanly.
The solution we came up with
A custom-built mailbox structure designed around the home, ready for a continuous stucco finish and integrated address detailing.
What we learned
Stucco can only look as straight and intentional as the structure beneath it. Getting the framing, openings and substrate geometry right first makes the finish work much easier.

Removed an old glass-block window and completely reworked the exterior wall. Rather than patching the horizontal siding, the entire gable section was redesigned with custom board-and-batten detailing so the former opening disappeared into an intentional architectural feature.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted an old glass-block window removed from the gable and the exterior left looking intentional—as though the window had never been there.
Problems we encountered
Simply patching the existing horizontal siding would have advertised exactly where the opening used to be. The wall also had to be closed, weather-protected and finished in a way that made architectural sense.
How we overcame those problems
After removing and closing the window opening, we chose not to imitate a patch. Instead, we redesigned the entire gable section with custom board-and-batten detailing so the repaired area became a new architectural feature.

A fully reworked gable in Heath with custom board-and-batten siding that visually eliminates the former glass-block opening.
What we learned
Sometimes the best repair is a redesign. When a patch will always look like a patch, expanding the scope just enough to create an intentional feature can produce a much better result.

What the homeowner wanted
The homeowner wanted convenient walk-through access added to an existing wrought-iron fence without replacing an otherwise good fence—and the new gate needed to look like it had always been there.
Problems we encountered
The new gate had to fit an existing opening and match existing metalwork. Hinge geometry, latch position, swing clearance and the relationship to the surrounding fence all had to be handled in the field.
How we overcame those problems
We measured the existing fence, fabricated the gate to match, field-fitted the hinge and latch locations, welded the required components and adjusted the gate until the swing and closing alignment were right.
The solution we came up with
A custom pedestrian gate that adds the needed access while maintaining the style and visual rhythm of the existing wrought-iron fence.
What we learned
Matching existing metalwork is rarely a shop-only job. Final fit, hinge alignment and reveal are best solved from real field dimensions and finished with on-site adjustment.
