Inspect the wall behind the existing finish

Siding removal is an opportunity to check sheathing, framing, water damage and insect damage instead of covering unknown conditions.

Choose the actual siding system

Fiber cement, engineered wood, wood and metal systems have different fastening, clearance and flashing requirements. “Board-and-batten” describes the look, not one installation method.

Plan the weather-resistive barrier

The wall needs a continuous drainage and flashing strategy around windows, doors and penetrations before the decorative siding is installed.

Work out panel and batten spacing

Batten spacing should look balanced around openings. Random narrow pieces beside windows can make the elevation look improvised.

Coordinate trim thickness

Window, corner and frieze trim must work with the siding thickness and create clean water-shedding transitions.

Follow manufacturer clearances

Required gaps above roofs, decks, grade and horizontal surfaces are important for durability and warranty.

Lay out the battens on a scaled photo of the wall before ordering material. A few inches of spacing adjustment can make windows and corners look much more intentional.
