Measure the real available width
Measure baseboard-to-baseboard, wall irregularities and door trim, then account for countertop overhang. A “36-inch vanity” may have a top that is slightly wider.
Check depth and walking space
Standard vanity depths can project farther than expected in a small bath. Mark the footprint with tape and make sure drawers and doors can open.
Locate plumbing
Existing drain and water lines influence whether a drawer layout will work without modification. Centered plumbing does not always match the new sink location.
Plan sink type and counter
Undermount, drop-in, vessel and integrated tops all change usable counter space and faucet placement.
Consider storage style
Deep drawers often make better use of space than large door cavities, but drawer boxes can conflict with plumbing.
Confirm mirror and light alignment
The vanity width, sink center, mirror and light fixture should be coordinated so the finished wall looks intentional.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring cabinet width but not countertop width
- Forgetting door casing or room-door swing
- Ordering drawers that conflict with drain piping
- Ignoring faucet height with medicine cabinets or mirrors
- Assuming existing plumbing centers match the new vanity
