Decide the gates first, then design the fence around them. Gates create the highest loads and the most usability problems, so their posts and clear openings deserve extra planning.

Small fence repairs can be DIY. Full layouts, property-line work, pool barriers, welded metal fencing and large gates are better suited to experienced installers.
