Safety first: Wet tile and cleaning residues may be slippery. Follow grout cure and ventilation instructions before returning the floor to use.

What this guide helps you decide

View grout samples next to the actual tile under the home's lighting. Very light grout can emphasize every joint; very dark grout may make the grid visually dominant.

Start with the existing conditions

Consider whether the floor sees pets, muddy shoes and kitchen spills. Grout chemistry, joint width and surface texture can change cleaning and installation requirements.

Plan materials, layout and access

Make a small sample board if the tile is highly varied. Confirm which grout product and color the installer will use, plus its cleaning and sealing recommendations.

Check the result and plan follow-up

Keep the product label in the home file and use manufacturer-approved cleaners after cure. Periodic cleaning prevents grime from becoming the main “color” of the joint.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing from a phone image
  • Mixing grout products or colors without testing
  • Assuming grout is a waterproofing layer

Tony’s Pro Tip

Look at a full square foot of tile and grout together. A color that seems subtle on a chip can dominate a floor when repeated thousands of times.

Should you DIY or hire help?

Hire a tile professional for failed joints, moving substrates, widespread cracking or unfamiliar grout systems.
