What this guide helps you decide
Choose a few candidate colors and obtain sample boards rather than painting tiny spots on a heavily colored wall. A surrounding color can distort how a sample looks.
Start with the existing conditions
Place samples on more than one wall and view them in morning, afternoon and evening light. The same paint can look very different near a north-facing window and under warm LEDs.
Plan materials, layout and access
Compare the candidate colors with flooring, cabinetry and trim. Check the desired sheen too, because gloss changes the way light reflects and highlights wall texture.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Choose a final color only after viewing a reasonably large sample in actual room lighting. Keep the product name, color formula and sheen in your home maintenance log.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing from phone photos alone
- Testing one tiny swatch
- Forgetting that sheen changes appearance
Tony’s Pro Tip
Move the same sample board from window light to a darker corner before making the final decision.
Should you DIY or hire help?
A painter can help when the room has extensive wall repairs, difficult high areas or incompatible existing coatings.
