Start with the style of the house
Simple square profiles suit many modern homes, while stepped or molded profiles can complement traditional interiors. Consistency across connected rooms usually looks intentional.
Scale trim to ceiling height
Very small baseboard can look weak in a tall room, while oversized trim can crowd a low wall. Use sample lengths in the room before committing.
Coordinate casing and baseboard
Door casing should relate to baseboard thickness and profile so transitions at plinths and corners do not look accidental.
Account for flooring
Hard-surface flooring may use shoe molding or quarter round to cover expansion gaps. Decide whether that detail fits the look you want.
Plan around existing doors and jambs
Thicker or taller trim can expose paint lines, require jamb extensions or interfere with switches located close to door openings.
Choose paint or stain early
Paint-grade MDF, finger-jointed wood and stain-grade hardwood have different cost, durability and moisture behavior.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing profile from a small sample only
- Using trim too thick for existing door jambs
- Forgetting shoe molding needs at floating floors
- Mixing unrelated profiles room to room
- Installing MDF where repeated moisture exposure is likely
Tony’s Pro Tip
Buy one 8-foot sample of the profile you like and lean it against the wall. Full-length trim looks much different than a 6-inch sample board at the store.
Should you DIY or hire help?
Simple trim replacement can be DIY with good measuring and miter skills. Complex returns, uneven walls, stain-grade work and large whole-house packages are better suited to finish carpentry.
