What this guide helps you decide
Measure both finished-floor elevations, including underlayment and setting materials, before choosing a transition. Small differences can become obvious at a doorway.
Start with the existing conditions
Identify whether the joint is a fixed material transition or an expansion space required by a floating floor. A rigidly fastened strip across a floating floor may interfere with movement.
Plan materials, layout and access
Choose a reducer, T-molding, threshold or flush detail compatible with the materials and the actual height difference. Check door swing, accessibility and cleaning needs at the same time.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Dry-fit the profile and walk across it in shoes before final fastening. Keep the attachment method clear of concealed radiant heat, pipes or wiring.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Selecting trim before measuring finished heights
- Fastening through a floating floor against instructions
- Creating a sharp raised trip edge
Tony’s Pro Tip
Plan transitions at the same time as flooring layout, not after every plank is down.
Should you DIY or hire help?
Hire an installer for multiple height changes, stair-nosing transitions or thresholds that affect doors and water management.
