What this guide helps you decide
List what will live on each shelf, including books, display pieces, monitors and charging equipment. Measure the tallest items before choosing shelf spacing.
Start with the existing conditions
Decide on lighting and outlet locations before building the cabinetry. Concealed wiring still needs suitable boxes, accessible connections and equipment-specific ventilation.
Plan materials, layout and access
Plan shelf spans, back-panel support and cabinet anchoring around actual wall framing. Heavy items should not rely on drywall anchors or decorative trim alone.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Make a full-size taped layout at desk height and test reach, glare and chair clearance. Coordinate finish color, light color and hardware with the surrounding room.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding outlets after the shelves are finished
- Underestimating book weight
- Blocking equipment ventilation
Tony’s Pro Tip
Place temporary cardboard shelves at the proposed heights and sit at the desk before committing to the cabinetry layout.
