How to Plan a TV Wall on a Covered Patio

Create an outdoor entertainment wall that protects the equipment and hides the wiring.

Safety first: Do not conceal extension cords in walls or open energized exterior boxes. Heavy screens and elevated mounting also present injury risks.

What this guide helps you decide

Decide where people will sit and check the viewing angle in morning and afternoon sun. Direct glare can make a large TV hard to use even when it fits the wall.

Start with the existing conditions

Select a display and mount rated for the location's actual exposure, temperature and moisture. “Under a roof” does not automatically make an indoor television suitable for an outdoor environment.

Plan materials, layout and access

Locate structural mounting support behind tile, siding or stone before selecting the TV position. Plan weather-appropriate power, signal routes and a way to service or replace the screen.

Check the result and plan follow-up

Check clearances to heaters, fans, doors and furniture, then mark the mounting center before finished cladding goes on. Keep low-voltage and line-voltage routing appropriate for their systems.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mounting to tile without verified structure
  • Running an ordinary extension cord inside a wall
  • Ignoring glare and heat

Tony’s Pro Tip

Tape a rectangle the size of the screen onto the wall and sit in the actual chairs before drilling.

Should you DIY or hire help?

Hire an experienced installer for heavy screens, stone or tile walls, concealed wiring or outdoor electrical additions.
