What this guide helps you decide
Decide whether the cover is for a doorway, seating or weather protection, then sketch its desired projection and width. Check clearances at windows, stairs, lighting and vehicle paths.
Start with the existing conditions
Review the existing house roofline and identify where new loads can be supported without relying on decorative fascia. Roof ties, posts, footings and connections need a site-specific design.
Plan materials, layout and access
Plan how water will leave the new roof and meet existing flashing, gutters and siding. An attractive ceiling will not rescue a poorly detailed roof-to-wall joint.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Choose the finished fascia, ceiling material, lighting and paint together so the addition visually belongs with the house. Verify permit and structural requirements before construction.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Attaching new loads to fascia alone
- Designing appearance before drainage
- Covering roof connections before inspection
Tony’s Pro Tip
View the proposed cover from across the street and from the doorway. Good proportions from both positions are what make an addition look original.
Should you DIY or hire help?
Hire a qualified contractor or designer for structural roof integration, roof flashing, footings or changes to the house's existing roof structure.
