How to Plan a Cooktop-to-Range Conversion

Measure the appliance and opening

Do not rely on nominal 30-inch or 36-inch labels. Use the exact appliance installation sheet for width, depth, height and required clearances.

Inspect the cabinet layout

A cooktop base cabinet may need to be removed or modified. Adjacent cabinet faces, toe kicks and finished ends must be planned so the new opening looks intentional.

Plan the countertop cut

A cooktop leaves a countertop bridge across the front and back. Converting to a range may require cutting or replacing countertop sections depending on material and seam location.

Confirm power or gas supply

A new range may need a different voltage, amperage, receptacle or gas connection than the cooktop and separate wall oven used previously.

Coordinate ventilation

If a hood or over-the-range microwave will serve the range, verify mounting height, duct path and cabinet configuration.

Plan wall and backsplash repairs

Removing cabinets or appliances often exposes unfinished wall, missing backsplash or flooring that must be patched to make the conversion look complete.
