An over-the-range microwave combines appliance, cabinet, mounting, electrical and ventilation requirements in one tight space.

Safety first: These appliances are heavy and typically require a dedicated or appropriately protected electrical supply. Use help for lifting and qualified electrical work when a new circuit or receptacle is required.

Check cabinet height and cooking clearance

The bottom of the microwave must meet appliance and cooking-surface clearance requirements. Existing cabinets sometimes hang too low for a proper installation.

Confirm the wall can support the bracket

The rear mounting plate needs solid attachment at approved locations. Do not assume drywall anchors alone are enough for a heavy appliance.

Verify the upper cabinet

Most units also fasten through the cabinet above. Confirm the cabinet is secure and has enough depth and interior space for bolts, cord and duct components.

Choose recirculating or ducted ventilation

Ducted exhaust generally moves cooking moisture and odors outdoors, but it requires a viable duct route. Recirculating systems use filters and return air to the room.

Locate power correctly

The cord and receptacle need to be positioned according to the appliance instructions, usually in the upper cabinet without interfering with ductwork.

Plan backsplash and wall finish

Removing an old hood can reveal unpainted wall, holes or a backsplash that does not extend behind the new appliance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring minimum cooking clearances
  • Mounting to drywall without adequate structural attachment
  • Discovering the duct route after the appliance is hung
  • Placing the receptacle where it conflicts with the duct
  • Lifting a heavy microwave without enough help

Before buying, measure from the cooktop to the bottom of the upper cabinet and compare that dimension to the microwave installation manual. Clearance is the first go/no-go test.
