How to Plan a Shower Niche

Decide what the niche must hold

Measure the tallest bottles and decide whether you want one open space, stacked compartments or a shelf. A niche designed around real products is more useful than one chosen only from a photo.

Choose location before rough-in is complete

Avoid conflicts with valves, supply lines, vent pipes, wiring and studs. A niche can sometimes be shifted a few inches to simplify the wall instead of forcing multiple trades to relocate work.

Coordinate the niche with tile layout

A niche that aligns with grout joints can look deliberate and reduce awkward sliver cuts. The tile dimensions, trim choice and finished opening size should be planned together.

Think about splash exposure

A niche directly in the main spray receives more water and soap. Some homeowners prefer a side wall or a location farther from the shower head for easier maintenance.

Waterproof every plane and penetration

The bottom needs positive drainage toward the shower, and all corners and transitions must be integrated with the selected waterproofing system.

Plan the edge detail

Choose bullnose, stone, metal trim or mitered tile before installation. Edge treatment changes both appearance and the required dimensions.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Sizing the niche before measuring actual bottles
• Putting the niche where plumbing occupies the stud bay
• Ignoring tile module and ending with tiny cuts
• Building a flat or back-pitched niche sill
• Choosing trim after tile work has started
