Safety first: If water is reaching electrical devices, ceilings below, visibly damaged framing or a soft floor, stop using the shower until the source is evaluated.

Look beyond the grout surface

Cracked grout can be cosmetic, but repeated cracks, loose floor tile or movement deserve closer attention. Surface repairs do not correct a failed waterproofing layer.

Check the areas outside the shower

Staining at baseboards, swelling trim, damp flooring, peeling paint on an adjacent wall or ceiling marks below the bathroom can be important clues.

Pay attention to the drain

Movement around the drain, recurring dampness or water that appears after the shower has been off can point to issues in the base or drain connection.

Watch for musty odor and slow drying

Persistent odor or areas that stay dark and damp can indicate trapped moisture. Ventilation can contribute, but the pattern matters.

Separate supply leaks from shower-use leaks

If moisture appears even when the shower is not used, a pressurized plumbing leak may be involved. If it appears only after showering, the enclosure, drain or waterproofing becomes more suspect.

Document when the symptom occurs

Photos and a simple timeline help narrow the cause. Note whether the leak appears immediately, after a long shower, only when water hits one wall or after the base fills with water.
