Start with room size
Fan capacity is commonly discussed in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Use manufacturer and local-code guidance for the room size, ceiling height and fixture count.
Do not ignore the duct
Long runs, multiple elbows, undersized duct or crushed flex duct can reduce airflow significantly. The path to the exterior matters as much as the fan rating.
Vent outdoors, not into the attic
Bathroom moisture should terminate outdoors through an approved roof or wall cap. Dumping humid air into an attic can contribute to condensation and wood damage.
Consider noise rating
A quieter fan is more likely to be used. Compare sone ratings if noise is important, especially in a bathroom near bedrooms.
Think about controls
Timer switches and humidity-sensing controls can keep the fan running long enough after a shower without relying on someone to remember it.
Look for signs of poor ventilation
Persistent mirror fog, peeling paint, mildew, damp towels and condensation on ceilings can indicate the fan is undersized, obstructed or not being run long enough.

- Choosing by CFM alone and ignoring duct resistance
- Venting into an attic or soffit cavity improperly
- Using an excessively long flexible duct run
- Selecting a noisy fan that nobody uses
- Turning the fan off immediately after showering

If the existing fan seems weak, inspect the duct and exterior flap before assuming the motor is the only problem. A blocked or collapsed duct can make a new fan perform just as badly.
