What this guide helps you decide
Compare the sunny and shaded sides of the house. South- and west-facing walls may weather differently, but runoff and moisture can also contribute to early failure.
Start with the existing conditions
Rub an inconspicuous spot with a clean cloth; loose powder may indicate a chalking coating. Photograph peeling edges, exposed wood and failed caulk separately because those need different repairs.
Plan materials, layout and access
Before repainting, identify the siding or trim material, soundness of the existing coating and the prep recommended for the new paint. Cleaning alone cannot repair rotten substrate or active moisture entry.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Choose an exterior coating suitable for the surface and exposure. Maintain gutters, flashings and caulk so new paint is not repeatedly wetted from behind.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Painting over loose chalk
- Choosing a coating without checking substrate compatibility
- Ignoring moisture behind peeling trim
Tony’s Pro Tip
Compare the same exterior wall at the same season each year. You can often spot coating failure before bare wood becomes exposed.
Should you DIY or hire help?
Hire exterior-repair help where wood is soft, sheathing is exposed, water enters behind siding or high access is required.
