What this guide helps you decide
Identify whether you are pricing an insert window or a full-frame replacement. The measurement needed depends on the proposed installation method, not just the visible glass size.
Start with the existing conditions
Measure the opening in multiple locations as directed by the window manufacturer and record the narrowest relevant dimension and any out-of-square condition. Note wall depth and trim restrictions.
Plan materials, layout and access
Photograph the exterior trim, sill, existing window type and any water stains. Record tempered-glass or egress requirements for the location with your installer rather than guessing.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Confirm handing, opening operation, screen options, grille pattern, glass package and finish before approving the order. Reconcile the final dimensions with the installer's field measurements.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring only the visible glass
- Ignoring an out-of-square opening
- Ordering before deciding insert versus full-frame
Tony’s Pro Tip
Ask your installer to write “final field-verified size” on the quote. A one-inch mistake is much more expensive after a special-order window arrives.
Should you DIY or hire help?
Hire a window professional for full-frame replacements, rotten sills, altered openings or locations with special safety-glazing or egress requirements.
