PROJECT CALCULATOR

Fence Calculator

Estimate fence panels and posts while accounting for gates and gate openings.

Enter the fence length, panel width and gate information.
Straight-run assumption: This post count is for one continuous straight/open fence run with gates located within the run. If your fence has corners or several separate runs, the post count changes.

How gates affect the estimate

The calculator subtracts the total gate opening from the fence run before calculating fence sections. For a straight continuous run, each interior gate adds one additional post beyond the normal sections-plus-one formula because the two gate posts also serve as the end posts for the fence on either side.

Example: A 160-foot straight fence with two 4-foot gates has 8 feet of gate openings, leaving 152 feet of fence. With 8-foot sections, that requires 19 sections. Post estimate: 19 sections + 1 starting/end post + 2 additional gate interruptions = 22 posts.
