What this guide helps you decide
List where the wear happens: muddy entries, food bowls, rolling chairs and pet nails create different needs. Bring a real sample into the most heavily used room.
Start with the existing conditions
Compare products using manufacturer abrasion, water-exposure and cleaning guidance, not claims that a floor is “pet-proof.” Look at texture and sheen; a glossy smooth floor may show scratches and offer less traction.
Plan materials, layout and access
Consider plank replacement, transitions, underlayment, sound and what happens if water gets under the floor. A waterproof plank does not make the subfloor immune to a long-term leak.
Check the result and plan follow-up
Test sample boards with normal cleaning and look at them in raking afternoon light. Plan mats near exterior doors and clean spills promptly.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying based only on waterproof marketing
- Overlooking pet traction
- Ignoring subfloor condition
Tony’s Pro Tip
Keep a spare box from the same production lot for future plank replacement, if the manufacturer recommends it.
