Safety first: Water heaters, electrical panels and dryers have clearance and fire-safety requirements. Do not modify utility connections casually.

What this guide helps you decide

List the items to store and measure the clear door opening with appliances in place. Deep shelves that fit the closet may still block the washer, dryer or water-heater service access.

Start with the existing conditions

Locate shutoff valves, electrical panels, vent terminations and required appliance clearances before sketching shelves. Do not put shelves where a technician must remove them for ordinary service.

Plan materials, layout and access

Choose shelf span and support suitable for the intended load and the actual wall framing. Moisture-resistant finishes matter in laundry and utility areas.

Check the result and plan follow-up

Mock up the deepest shelf with cardboard, then open every appliance door and test access to shutoffs. Label stored chemicals and keep them away from heat.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Covering shutoff valves
  • Resting heavy shelves on drywall alone
  • Blocking a dryer vent or required equipment clearance

Tony’s Pro Tip

Stand in the closet with an empty laundry basket and open all the doors before approving the shelf depth.

Should you DIY or hire help?
